Transforming Young Musicians Through Jazz Education That Removes Barriers and Opens Doors

Programs Overview

The Cincinnati Jazz Academy provides high-quality, barrier-free jazz education for Cincinnati Public Schools students in grades 4-12. Rehearsals take place weekly at the Kennedy Heights Arts Center Lindner Annex, directed by Dr. Isidore Rudnick, a nationally recognized music educator, arts administrator, conductor, and jazz trombonist.

Each student receives a full $1,600 scholarship covering all program costs, including group instruction, private lessons, transportation, instruments, and meals. Weekly rehearsals include 90 minutes of ensemble training, and students not already taking private lessons receive one-on-one instruction from experienced instructors. The Academy provides full rhythm section equipment, ensuring all students have access to the tools they need to succeed.

Jazz Academy ensembles perform several concerts annually, including the CPS International Jazz Festival at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. Advanced combo groups for elementary, junior high, and high school students are also offered by invitation, providing opportunities to work with master guest artists and perform at prestigious events.

Admission is by nomination from a CPS music teacher or the Jazz Academy Director, with spaces limited by instrument category. Interested families should contact Dr. Isidore Rudnick at rudnici@cpsboe.k12.oh.us for more information.
